Blackhead from Black Dome
USGS Map: Freehold
NY-NJ Trail Conference Map: #41/141
Order of Height: 5th at 3940'
Access: Blackhead Mountain Trail or The Escarpment Trail
Description: Blackhead is the easternmost peak of the Blackhead Range and the highest peak on the 24-mile Escarpment Trail. It forms the highest point on the Great Wall of Manitou and is a 3000-foot climb (bushwhack) from Winter Clove to the east. There is a fine view west of the summit on the Blackhead Mountain Trail while descending towards Lockwood Gap, but there is no view from the summit.
There is also an overgrown view from the Escarpment Trail as it ascends from the south. Access is from the north via the Batavia Kill and Escarpment Trails from Big Hollow or the Black Dome Range and Blackhead Mountain Trails from Big Hollow via Lockwood Gap. A circular hike can be made using both routes. From the south, access is from Colgate Lake or a very long hike from North Lake via the Escarpment Trail. Blackhead is a required winter peak.
