Cole Mountain in Fall
USGS Map: Hensonville
NY-NJ Trail Conference Map: #41
Order of Height: 4
Access: Via Black Dome Range Trail
Description: Thomas Cole is the westernmost high peak in the Blackhead Range. Like Black Dome Mountain, it offers a view south towards the southern Catskills. However, the viewpoint is overgrown and you must stand to see the view.
The route from Barnum Road and over the somewhat open knob of Camel's Hump requires more vertical ascent but it is spectacular especially when the leaves are down.
The best lunch spot is found on Black Dome, the next peak in the range. From the west, access is via the Black Dome Range Trail from Maplecrest. From the east, access is via the Black Dome Range Trail over Black Dome from Big Hollow and Lockwood Gap.
